What did I expect? How is anyone going to start their journey 6 days before Xmas. Especially in our house.
I know here come the excuses. But you cannot have anything other than a full Christmas dinner with all of the trimmings in our house.
Yes I am talking the works. Turkey, Gammon, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, parmesan rolls, vegetables, Yorkshire puddings.
Oh, and then desert! Christmas pudding and more.
If I am honest the run up to Xmas was not much better. McDonald’s one day, Chinese takeaway on my birthday.
Come on. It was my birthday.
If you have landed on this blog and wondering what this is all about, check out my ‘Journey to 40: I don’t want to get old’ post.
In short, the thought of reaching 40 scares the hell out of me. This is all about my two year journey to 40 years old, and making some pretty big changes in my life along the way. I have put these changes into 4 big journey goals with the aim of reporting progress each week. These are:
Come with me on my journey and I hope to inspire yours.
What has been going on this week?
As well as a very nice birthday, we had a very nice, but strange Christmas.
I am sure like many of you, Christmas tends to be a big family affair. If you are not hosting or are travelling.
This year Covid-19 put a stop to the Christmas we all know and love. We are lucky, in that we have 4 children who are still young enough to enjoy the magic of Christmas, and the house will never be quiet.
With the added dimension of family Zoom calls before we knew it Christmas day was over, and so was the first week of my journey.
So, how did I get on with my all-important journey goals.
Let’s start with…
I think let’s start with the stats.
|Weight||17st 2lb (2450lb) / 109kg||109.2kg / 17st 2 lb|
|Waist||48in / 122cm||48in / 122cm|
|Chest||48in / 122cm||48in / 122cm|
|Leg (thigh)||24in / 61cm||24in / 61cm|
|Arm (upper)||15.7in / 40cm||15.7in / 40cm|
I gained 0.2kg.
I wasn’t expecting anything different. Maybe weighting myself the morning after Christmas day is not such a good idea. I’m surprised my waist didn’t grow with it.
But wait. I knew this week was going to be impossible from an eating point of view. So my actual goal for this week was not really eating less over Xmas. It was to STOP SNACKING!
Okay, if I am honest it wasn’t a big success there either.
Although, I was making more of a conscious effort not to snack during the day.
It helped that the children have finished school for the year. So no more nibbling as I made their packed lunches.
Setting some healthy eating goals for Week 2
Come on let’s be realistic here. We have Boxing day and New Year’s day. Another two big food days in our household. I know they don’t have to be, but the wife has already brought all the food. Maybe the weight thing is going to have to be one of those traditional New Year Resolutions.
Anyway, back to what goal I will set for this coming week.
I think it has to be a little more of the same. Less snacking and maybe instead of 2 or 3 pudding servings, let’s have the one serving. That in itself is a huge challenge. One thing you should know is that I have a massive sweet tooth. I would gladly skip the main course and have a couple of desserts.
I did it. I went for my first run in over 3 years!
This was a massive achievement for me. It was on 22nd December. And yes, my son came with me.
Now for the, not to shout about news.
We only ran about a mile (1.6km). I didn’t time my first run, so I don’t have a clue how long I took. I probably could have walked it just a quick.
Even more embarrassingly my son was literally walking keeping up with me jogging.
When we got back home I was in an out of breath sweaty mess. He walks through the door all bouncy, not a bead of sweat on him. Both he and his mother proceed to take the piss out of me. He is 9 years old!!!!!
My legs ached for days after that. I am not surprised. They have not had that punishment and weight pounding them for a long time.
That has not deterred me though. I want to get back into running again. I just hope the old body can take the punishment.
Now the other fitness goal of doing a few sets/reps didn’t get started at all. Again, I blame Christmas. But really I just couldn’t be bothered and probably didn’t really know where to start.
Setting my fitness goals for next week
I should probably try to set the same goal as week 1 and actually do it this time.
So I need to try and start doing some simple daily reps of some kind. As I write this post I am still not sure what is best to start with. I will think about that.
I would also like to get 1 or 2 runs in. See if I can get my daughter(s) along for the run.
If anyone has suggestions about what simple reps I could do to start toning a little, please do drop a comment below. I was thinking press ups and sit ups as I know how to do these. I will probably leave the cardio element for the running so this is all about core/tone/stretch, rather than increasing my heart rate.
This is one of those goals that I have actually made a conscious decision this week to park over the holiday period.
I would like to spend time focusing on the family for the next two weeks. Not worrying about what my career looks like in 2021. Even if 2021 is days away.
So I am not going to set any mini-goals on this for next week. But as a reminder to myself, I do want to put a couple of things in place when I return to work on the 4th Jan. So really this is a note to myself for the next blog post.
Set a task to block out about 1 hour in my working day for professional development. I think this is a good use of time that will benefit me and the company. I will follow that up with what I intend to do in that hour at a later date.
More on this goal in the coming weeks.
Building an online presence
You may have noticed by the title of this section, that I have changed the name of this goal. This is much better. It represents what I actually want to achieve.
Apart from this blog series nothing much has changed in the last week however.
I don’t know why I expected to get anything done in the run up to Christmas day. So I guess it is a bit of a fail on the two mini-goals I set for this week. If I am going to be really honest with myself, I don’t think much is going to get done next week either.
I have had a think about how I might turn these posts in video/audio to reach a wider audience. I am still a long way from having the confidence to share who I am with the world and I guess what I am doing with my family and friends. Creating a vlog might be a little difficult if I am not in the video. Who wants to listen to a faceless bloke droning on about his journey?
I do need to put together my next DIY blog post. I have plenty of ideas, I just need to get on and write them now.
I am finding that the DIY blog posts are taking a little longer to write. Those posts really need to have some solid structure and pictures to support a more ‘how to approach’. While I would love to litter these journey posts with images, it is not going to add a great deal to the post right now. So you will just have to put up with me waffling on in words for now.
So, like the professional development, I don’t think I will be setting myself any tasks next week.
What are my week 2 tasks/mini-goals?
- Snack less during the day/evening and have less portions of sweet stuff
- Start doing some daily reps of some kind
- Get another 1 or 2 runs in
- Nothing specific on the professional development or build an online presence
So not a massive target setting and inspiring week coming up but this is all about some quality time with the family. Whether they like it or not. Maybe that should be the top point on my week 2 goal setting list.
Happy Xmas everyone.
